Context and Objectives

The Swiss Confederation has set ambitious targets for photovoltaic (PV) energy generation. By 2035, PV generation is expected to be approximately eight times higher than in 2022.

A distribution system operator must ensure its grid can accommodate this influx of power and subsequently plan the necessary investments over a 10-year horizon.

Approach and Results

The assignment involves the following steps:

  • Creation of a digital twin of the grid using the client’s GIS tool;
  • Calculation of rooftop PV potential;
  • Development of PV generation growth scenarios;
  • Calculation of PV hosting capacity over a 10-year horizon using a probabilistic approach;
  • Deployment and configuration of the application.

The results obtained are as follows:

  • Assessment of network constraints: location and likely timeframe;
  • Estimation of appropriate measures;
  • Development of the investment plan.
