Context and Objectives

Committed to its role in the energy transition, Viteos aims to anticipate the evolution of its business model, particularly in light of the expected decline in gas-related revenues and the significant need to transform its infrastructure.

The assignment defines a strategic vision for 2050, covering both the role of distribution system operator (DSO) and service-related activities, and translates it into a sustainable financial trajectory and a fully resourced plan.

This vision is broken down into medium-term investment (and divestment) master plans, while also providing a decision-support framework to evaluate the opportunities and risks associated with energy initiatives at the cantonal level.

Finally, the approach establishes the activities, methods and processes required to create and update long-term thermal network planning, while also supporting teams so they can independently manage and update these strategies.

Approach and Results

Our project team adopted an approach acting as the architect of a comprehensive vision, reconciling the expectations and constraints of the company’s various entities. We also foster alignment between top management, technical teams and finance departments, while sharing our expertise through close collaboration with the Viteos teams.

The assignment delivered an investment decision-support tool, along with processes for keeping it updated, covering a 30-year period (2025-2050). Operating at the district (sub-network) level, the tool is structured around the following modules:

  • Energy demand scenarios (demand),
  • Target scenarios for thermal networks (supply),
  • Asset investment and divestment trajectories, including renewals, expansions and decommissioning, modelled using the Eqylibr® tool,
  • Resource planning and projected profit and loss account,
  • Evolution of technical, financial and environmental indicators (CO2, energy mix, etc.), enabling scenario comparison and the measurement of deviations from a baseline.

Key figures:

1,150 km of modelled networks and over 1,090 GWh of heat distribution
